Rivers School - Prep Profile

November 6th, 2009
New England Recruiting Report

Coming off a wonderful season a year ago, Rivers School will be looking to repeat as Class B champions.

With the luxury of returning their entire team that finished second in the ISL and won last year’s NEPSAC Class B prep school tournament championship, Coach Pipe’s team  is not only talented but the nucleus of this team will be around for a number of years.

Claire Sullivan 6’2 junior post player is getting interest from a host of Division I schools. Her game is characterized by solid interior play. She is a tremendous passer out of her post position. Her biggest strength, though, may be her face up game. She has range out to three point land with a soft touch.  Sullivan is a very good rebounder and plays well in space.  According to Pipe, she has shown flashes of brilliance.

Tayra Melendez  5’10 sophomore combo guard had a tremendous inaugural  campaign as she was named MVP of class prep school tournament where she averaged 19pts, 6asts and 10rebs. Tayra is a dynamic player who has tremendous versatility. She is a pure scorer and has the ability to not only get to the rim but shoot the three and go down on the block & put defenders on her back and finish. Melendez sees the game very well and  has a high basketball IQ. She may very well this team’s best passer as well

Megan Kerbs  5’9 sophomore is a pure shooter and led the team in scoring last year despite coming off the bench. She is a long athletic player with good size which enables her to defend at a high level.  Kerbs 14ppg was not only a direct result of her ability to shoot the three but also get to the line. She creates a ton of contact at the rim.

Sara Berthiaume 5’8 junior point guard is two time all league. She is adept at shooting the three as well as getting to the lane and finishing. She is good defender. Sara’s leadership, ability to run the team and be an extension of Coach Pipe is clearly evident on many levels. She was named this teamls Most Important Player last year.

Shannon McSweeney 5’8 senior guard is a disruptive defender who does all the little things very well.  She is likely a division 1 soccer player.

Leah Stansky senior captain comes off the bench and serves as the team’s backup point guard. She is a wonderful defender and solid ball handler.

Nikki Kaitz 6’1 senior captain who also comes off the bench and provides this team with another big post. She is good defender and does a nice job distribution from the inside out.

Ultimately, duplicating the 2008-2009 season may be a realistic possibly for Rivers. This may very well be the precedent of excellence that Coach Pipe’s team is attempting to set moving forward as they strive to take their second consecutive NEPSAC Class B title.
