Several teams will be looking to dethrone back to back champion Deering in the SMAA.
Two time state champion Deering appears poised for another title run returning several key components from last year’s undefeated team. Three starters – Junior Kayla Burchill, an all state selection as a sophomore averaging 12ppg and 6.3rpg, senior Claire Ramonas, an intimidating force inside on both ends and junior Britni Mikulanecz, a dynamic point guard who as a creator can also affect the game on the defensive end of the floor will form a three headed monster that will be tough to stop.
Also in contention should be Biddeford who returns several key players including Lauren Rousseau, a senior point guard who some consider one of the top playmakers in the SMAA. She has 3-point range on her shot and is also capable of both getting to the rim from last year’s 16-5 team.
Scarborough may be one of the deepest and versatile team in the SMAA and certainly has championship level experience from their state titles in other sports as well as their conference semifinal run last year. Christy Manning, senior forward an All-State selection as a junior led the Red Storm in scoring and rebounding each of the last three years.
Two teams that lost in the quarterfinals last year who could make a playoff push is McAuley and Brunswick. McAuley has strong group of returning players including UMaine recruit Rebecca Knight who averaged 14.5 ppg and Hannah Cooke a freshman who transferred from Portland. Brunswick has a solid backcourt with seniors Alexa Dearborn and Hilary Champagne
